The city of Inglewood has received an award from the federal government for a program that finds commercial uses for residential land blighted by airport noise.

Robert Del Monte, regional administrator for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), presented the Inglewood City Council this week with a Certificate of National Merit.

Inglewood has received about $14 million in federal and airport grants for the Century Redevelopment Project, which relocates residents living near airport flight paths, buys the property and sells it to developers of warehouses, air freight companies and light industry.

The program has created a partnership among private investors, Los Angeles International Airport, HUD and other federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration.
