A Swedish prosecutor ordered a 41-year-old man held in custody in the slaying of Prime Minister Olof Palme. Sweden’s strict press and libel law forbids publication of a suspect’s name, but he was identified in public records as Christer Pettersson. Palme, a four-term Social Democratic prime minister who championed international peace and disarmament issues, was killed the night of Feb. 28, 1986, while walking toward his Stockholm home unguarded with his wife from a downtown movie theater. Swedish radio reported that a witness identified Pettersson as someone who was waiting outside the theater. The suspect has a previous manslaughter conviction.
