Ankton’s Free Throws Win It for El Camino

Glenn Ankton made both free throws in a 1-and-1 situation with 7 seconds remaining to give El Camino its first lead of the second half and the victory, 67-66, over Glendale Hoover in the first round of the Chart House/Lt. Mitchell tournament.

El Camino (3-1) took an early, 23-16 first-quarter lead but was outscored, 22-12, in the second. Hoover held the lead throughout the second half until Ankton was fouled driving to the basket with time running down.

El Camino playing a tight denial defense, yielded only a desperation heave--that drew nothing but air--from Hoover at the buzzer.

Ankton scored a team-high 19 points, while Travis Gilley and Shaun Scurry added 14 and 13. Todd Swanson had 7 assists.

The game and two others were originally scheduled to be played at San Dieguito. They were switched to Carlsbad High when the lights at San Dieguito went out during warmups for the Escondido-Newport Harbor game earlier in the day.

Escondido 61, Newport Harbor 41--Chris Heintschel had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Curt Vurpillap 10 points and 13 rebounds and Brooks Barnhard 16 points for Escondido (3-0), which outscored Newport Harbor, 23-10, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory at Carlsbad.

“It was a frustrating day,” said Mike Williams, Escondido coach. “It was the last day of school before vacation, and then the lights went out.”

Originally scheduled for 3 p.m., the game didn’t begin until 4:45.

“Playing-wise, we didn’t get started until the fourth quarter,” Williams said.

Four other Vista players reached double figures: Mike Araiza (17), Upu Liuchan (12), Brian Fleming (10) and Choo Choo Walker (10).
