Share

A 28-year-old man was struck by a car and killed Saturday as he tried to dash across 4 traffic lanes on the Golden State Freeway near Newhall.

William John DeMattia of Newhall was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:15 p.m. accident on the southbound Golden State Freeway near the Lyons Avenue off-ramp, California Highway Patrol Officer Diane Lowery said.

DeMattia was struck by a car driven by John Moorhead, 23, of Martinez as DeMattia attempted to run from the center divider to the freeway shoulder, Lowery said. Although the accident is still under investigation, Lowery said, Moorhead, who was traveling at about 55 m.p.h., probably was not to blame. He was questioned at the scene and released.
