A man whose body was found on the bedroom floor of his La Habra home had been shot in the back and there was no evidence of robbery or forced entry, authorities said Tuesday.

The body of Benson Fan, 29, was discovered by his sister about 11:15 p.m. Monday, but he had been dead for hours, La Habra Police Sgt. Tom Machado said.

Paramedics called to the home by the sister, Jane Fan, discovered the gunshot wound, Machado said. Orange County coroner’s investigators later determined that Benson Fan had been dead several hours.

“We don’t have any information that would indicate a robbery. . . . there didn’t appear to be anything obvious as far as a motive, “ Machado said, adding that a murder investigation is continuing.

Fan’s neighbor, Helen Young, said police awakened her at 4 a.m. Tuesday asking for information about the victim.

“I was shocked because who would want to hurt him? He’s such a nice young man, very pleasant, very soft-spoken, very friendly,” Young said.

The victim and his sister, who shared the home in the 2300 block of Oakland Street, “were liked in the neighborhood. They were very quiet people,” Young said.

Young described their street as “a very safe and quiet neighborhood. . . . This has come as a shock to all of us.”
