Boxing will be reinstated at the Naval Academy next semester, after a superintendent’s order to purchase more protective headgear, an academy spokesman says.

The academy denied that its recent suspension of contact boxing was linked to an incident in which a plebe underwent surgery early this month to remove a blood clot from his head a day after sparring in physical education class.

Spokesman Jay Fromkin said Monday that the decision to suspend the activity stemmed from an excessive number of nose injuries this year, not the student’s injuries.

To combat the injuries, Superintendent Rear Adm. Virgil Hill approved the purchase of 60 new head protectors, which Fromkin described as state-of-the-art safety equipment with chin padding and cheek pads that extend farther up the face than current headgear to better protect the nose.

The new equipment should be delivered before midshipmen return for second-semester classes, which begin Jan. 9, Fromkin said.
