Women’s Basketball Roundup : No. 8 Long Beach Outlasts Washington, 81-77

Traci Waites sank 2 free throws with 7 seconds left Tuesday night and eighth-ranked Cal State Long Beach held off Washington, 81-77, to win the Seattle Times-Husky women’s basketball tournament at Seattle.
Long Beach (6-2) was trailing, 50-45, with 17:52 left, but the 49ers scored 12 straight points to take the lead for good. However, Washington (4-5) made it close when Laurie Merlino hit a 3-point shot to get the Huskies to within 79-77 with 23 seconds left.
Waites and Penny Toler scored 18 points each and sophomore Penny Moore had all of her 12 points in the second half.
Tennessee 82, UCLA 50--Bridgette Gordon scored 16 points and the top-ranked Lady Volunteers coasted past the Bruins at Knoxville, Tenn.
UCLA (3-5) made 20 turnovers and made only 23% of its shots while falling behind, 44-20, at halftime and never got back into the game.
Tennessee jumped to a 13-2 lead and made 46% of its shots while building its halftime lead. The Lady Volunteers increased their lead to 37 points with 5:44 left.
DeDe Mosman scored 16 points for the Bruins, while Daedra Charles added 14 for Tennessee (7-0), while Dena Head and Debbie Scott each had 11 for the Lady Volunteers.
