David Cobb; Early Grand Ole Opry Announcer

David Cobb, 76, the former radio announcer credited with coining Nashville’s nickname--”Music City, U.S.A.” Cobb was affiliated with WSM Inc. from 1937 to 1972, and, with Louie Buck and Judd Collins, was one of the first three announcers at the Grand Ole Opry. In a 1964 historical review of the Opry, the Nashville Tennessean said Cobb had ad-libbed an announcement during a 1960 program, saying that “the sounds listeners were hearing on WSM radio were coming from ‘Music City, U.S.A.’ ” On Saturday in Nashville, Tenn., after heart surgery.
