Despite the Republican Party’s winning streak in recent presidential elections, the GOP remains a minority party, according to the Gallup Poll. George Bush’s victory last November gave the Republicans five victories in six presidential elections, including three straight victories by comfortable margins. But while the success of the Bush candidacy may have helped to at least temporarily increase Republican Party affiliations, the percentage of American adults who consider themselves Democrats is still larger than the percentage who call themselves Republicans. The latest Gallup Poll results, based on interviews conducted during the presidential campaign, give the Democrats a nine percentage point edge in party affiliation--40% to 31%.
