Gamble’s 28 Points Help Lift Connecticut Past Waves, 76-70

Phil Gamble scored a career-high 28 points, including 5 3-point goals, to lead Connecticut to a 76-70 victory over Pepperdine Friday night.

Gamble scored 19 of his points in the first half, when the Huskies (6-1) rallied from an 11-point deficit to take a 44-38 lead at halftime.

Gamble, Murray Williams and Willie McCloud took charge down the stretch as Pepperdine (7-4) pulled within 2 points, 65-63. The trio scored 9 of Connecticut’s final 11 points and combined for several key steals in the last 4 minutes.

Pepperdine had taken an early lead behind the shooting of Tom Lewis and Craig Davis, stretching the advantage to 28-17 midway through the first half. Gamble and Cliff Robinson combined for 16 of Connecticut’s next 27 points as the Huskies gained the halftime lead. Pepperdine did not lead after that.

Robinson finished with 14 points for Connecticut. Lewis had 27, Dexter Howard scored 16 and Davis had 11 for Pepperdine.
