RCA: When RCA landed the sound-track rights to a low-budget, coming-of-age film set in the Catskills, who would have guessed it would be the label’s luckiest break since signing Elvis. Call it fluke or phenomena, but “Dirty Dancing” has sold 10 million albums (7 million this year), making it the industry’s biggest-seller since “Born in the U.S.A.” Even harder to believe--its hastily-compiled sequel sold 3 million copies. Thanks to a savvy distribution deal with rap-oriented Jive Records, the label hit double platinum with DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and platinum with Kool Moe Dee. RCA has also grabbed critical kudos for its signing of the Cowboy Junkies. On the debit side: the once-potent Eurythmics fell short of the Top 40 with their “Savage” album.
