Washington Mayor Marion Barry Jr.’s visits to a hotel room occupied by a drug suspect last week have renewed questions about Barry’s possible involvement with drugs and added another problem to the mayor’s list of political woes. The Police Department’s internal affairs division is investigating why two detectives were stopped from attempting an undercover drug buy from former city employee Charles Lewis last Thursday, after Barry turned up at Lewis’ room. Barry has since acknowledged making several calls upon Lewis, whom he described as an acquaintance, but denied any involvement with drugs. Two months earlier, Barry checked into a health spa in southeastern New York state, but denied receiving any treatment for drug or alcohol abuse during his two-week stay.
