WHERE HOMELESS CAN GET HELP

Anchor House 150 Avenida Pico, San Clemente (office), (714) 492-6924 Nonprofit organization under the auspices of the Episcopal Service Alliance providing shelter and medical aid to homeless families for up to 2 months. Clients must be willing to seek employment and, once they are working, must save 80% of their income while staying at the shelter. Employment counseling is also provided.

Brothers of Charity 1921 W. Washington Ave., Santa Ana, (714) 834-9951 Temporary housing for families with children for up to 3 months. Basic medical assistance, three meals per day. Office open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Catholic Charities 2829 W. 1st St., Santa Ana (714) 543-3924 The agency provides shelter information and referral services Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. When funds are available, the agency also assists with the first month’s rent on apartments. In emergency situations, Catholic Charities will pay for motel accommodations, with the length of stay based on need.

Chicano Pintos 12900 Garden Grove Blvd., suite 145, Garden Grove, (714) 636-5052 Primarily a job-search program, this agency also provides emergency motel accommodations for anyone, including families, actively seeking employment. Length of stay depends upon need, up to 1 week. Clothing, food and bus tickets are also available.

Christian Temporary Housing Inc. 704 N. Glassell St., Orange, and 393 S. Tustin Ave., Tustin; (714) 771-2969 For homeless families with children. Up to 60-night stays. Adults required to actively seek work and save toward rent. Program provides 2,000 shelter nights per month. Meals and showers provided from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Glassell Street address. After-hours hot line, 542-BEDS, provides help and referrals. Staff members are former homeless individuals.

Community Resource Center 549 W. La Habra Blvd., La Habra (213) 697-1199 Nonprofit organization of churches and service clubs staffed by volunteers provides vouchers for emergency housing and referrals for medical care and food.

Dayle McIntosh Center, HEARTH Program (714) 772-8285 (voice) or (714) 772-8366 (telephone device for the deaf). Emergency short-term housing for the handicapped or members of their families. Six-bed facility provides shelter for up to 60 days for clients seeking employment and/or Social Security benefits.

Episcopal Service Alliance 311 W. South St., Anaheim (714) 776-7510 Primarily a referral agency but can also provide motel accommodations for up to 2 weeks, depending on need. If necessary, groceries will also be provided. Priority goes to single women with children and other family groups. Policy is not to assist individuals on more than three occasions.

FISH-North Orange County 244 E. Valencia Drive, Room 17, Fullerton, (714) 533-3113 Provides food and motel accommodations, as well as transportation for the elderly.

FISH-Harbor Area 177 Riverside Ave., Suite F, Newport Beach, (714) 642-6060 An outreach service providing temporary motel lodging to families only. Length of stay is determined on a case-by-case basis. Also provides groceries, bus tickets and gasoline.

Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service, NEW VISTA Shelter 244 E. Valencia Drive, Fullerton (714) 738-0255 or 680-3691 Provides needy families with children in north Orange County with emergency shelter and food. Housing for five or six families for up to 2 months. Clients must save 80% of income while at the shelter. Apply by phone from 1 to 4 p.m.

Halcyon (714) 534-6458 (calls taken by Lutheran Social Services). Families are placed in Anaheim apartment units for up to 60 days. Groceries are included. Residents must actively seek employment. Once employed, they are required to save up to 80% of their income so that they will have money when they depart.

Irvine Temporary Housing Inc. Office address: 3347 Michelson Drive, Suite 390, (714) 975-4050 Transitional housing for families only for up to 90 days. Clients housed in furnished apartments. Family counseling, employment assistance and food also provided.

Lutheran Social Services 23532 El Toro Road, El Toro (714) 768-0405 (no food at this location) 215 1/2 N. Lemon St., Fullerton (714) 738-1058 12432 Ninth St., Garden Grove (714) 534-6450 Provides food and clothing primarily, but can offer one week’s motel accommodations to families only. Also assists in paying utility bills.

New Vista Temporary Housing Shelter 244 E. Valencia Drive, Fullerton (applications only; location of shelter is confidential), (714) 738-0255 Serves families only (including single-parent families). Provides room and board at no charge, but residents must place 80% of their income into a savings account to cover first and last months’ rent when they leave. All residents must have income when they apply or find a job within 30 days. Maximum length of stay is 60 days.

Orange County Inter-Faith Shelter (714) 631-7213 Costa Mesa-based emergency shelter for families with children. Descending priorities are couples, single women and then single men. Can house 12 families for up to 60 days. Advisers help clients find jobs and also help with budgeting and parenting problems. Clients must save 80% of their income. Short-term shelter also available.

Orange County Rescue Mission 190l W. Walnut St., Santa Ana, (714) 835-0499 (men’s facility) (714) 978-8117 (women’s facility; address is confidential). The women’s program includes food and lodging for up to 56 days. Residents must obtain jobs within a week of their arrival. There is mandatory Bible study every night, curfew and housekeeping duties. Children are permitted, but no boys older than 9 years. The men’s facility allows stays of five days out of every 30, including meals and lodging. Residents finding jobs are entitled to 21 additional days. There is mandatory attendance at daily religious services.

Placentia Human Services 974 S. Melrose Ave., Placentia (714) 630-3871 City Division of Human Services provides limited emergency assistance for Placentia residents through a voucher system.

Salvation Army Hospitality House of Orange County 818 E. 3rd St., Santa Ana (714) 542-9750 Staffed by homeless people. Hot meals and shelter provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Clients may stay for 3 days. Those who are employed and who are saving to rent a home may be eligible to stay up to 30 days.

Share Our Selves 661 Hamilton St., Costa Mesa (714) 642-3451 Provides motel accommodations to families only. Length of stay based on need. Medical and dental clinic services are also available, as are groceries, legal aid and assistance with utility bills.

Sheep Fold P.O. Box 992, Tustin (714) 669-9569 Christian organization with shelters in Garden Grove and Tustin, caring for single women with children for up to 3 weeks. In come cases, clients can stay for up to three months.

Shelter for the Homeless 7261 Westminster Blvd., Westminster, (714) 897-3221 Provides free food and lodging to single men. Laundry and telephone services also available. Residents must find employment within the first 15 days, after which they may stay for an additional 15 days. Travelers Aid Society 9872 Chapman Ave., Suite 203

Garden Grove (714) 530-2426 Referrals for emergency shelter, food, transportation, counseling and crisis-intervention services for families and individuals living in Orange County. The society also assists runaways, stranded travelers, the homeless and newcomers seeking employment.

YMCA Hotel for Women 1411 N. Broadway, Santa Ana (714) 542-3577 For women who have recently become homeless or face imminent loss of housing and need temporary shelter while seeking employment. There are 26 free beds and 12 low-cost beds with communal kitchen/lounge facilities. Counseling and employment services are provided. Clients may stay up to 60 days.
