Scores of friends and family from around the country gathered this morning in Westminster at a memorial service for Jerry Avritt, flight engineer aboard Pam Am Flight 103 that exploded in flight over Scotland.

Bodies of about 10 American victims of the Dec. 21 bomb disaster that killed 259 passengers and crew members have been released by authorities in Lockerbie, a State Department spokeswoman said. Avritt’s was not among them. Avritt, 46, worked on Pan Am’s European routes out of New York City and commuted home to Orange County to spend time with his family.

Avritt’s wife, Judy, and their two teen-age children attended the ceremonies at the Church of Blessed Sacrament. “It’s a shock. Jerry is the type of guy you can’t believe is dead,” said Mario Eribe, 47, of Fountain Valley, one of the speakers at the service.
