About 20 homes were evacuated after a leak of ammonia gas developed at a cold storage company in San Jose, police said. A ruptured pipe caused the ammonia fumes, described as “very toxic,” to drift over a 4-square-block area. Fire officials said the plant engineer at the Modern Ice & Cold Storage Co. believes someone tampered with a pipe.
