Ari Vatenen of Finland, driving a Peugeot, won the 382-mile auto portion of the Gao to Timbucktu leg of the Paris-Dakar rally.

Jacky Ickx of Belgium, was second, 2 minutes 57 seconds behind, and retained the overall lead, 2 hours 21 minutes ahead of Vatenen.

Stephane Peterhansel of France, aboard a Yamaha, won the motorcycle leg through the desert of Mali.
