A homeless man was arrested in the strangulation, rape and robbery of Dr. Kathryn Hinnant, a pathologist, in her Bellevue Hospital office in New York City. The suspect told investigators he sometimes slept in an empty bed in the hospital, police said. Steven Smith, 23, was found by police at a homeless shelter after three men came forward with credit and identification cards belonging to the victim, Police Commissioner Benjamin Ward said. The city had offered a $30,000 reward for information about the slaying, which Mayor Edward I. Koch called “the No. 1 case to be solved.” About 50 detectives were assigned to the case. Dr. Hinnant, 33, was five months pregnant.
