United Press International President Paul Steinle has announced about 40 layoffs and other staff shifts, saying those changes and other developments will help the company “see profitability before the year is out.” Steinle said roughly half of the layoffs will affect overseas bureaus--needed to reduce costs in the face of declining revenues. Two part-time feature writers in Washington and one full-time feature writer in Los Angeles were laid off.
