A storm-battered fuel barge in Anchorage leaked 1 million gallons of diesel fuel into the North Pacific while gale-force winds and mountainous waves attacked ships off Alaska, officials said. Rough seas knocked one man off an oil tanker to his death, Alaska state troopers reported, but 77 crewmen on two disabled fishing vessels from Japan and South Korea were safe and being rescued, the Coast Guard said. Seven American fishermen abandoned a sinking ship in the Bering Sea but were saved. The barge that leaked 1 million gallons holds another 1 million gallons of diesel fuel, and the Coast Guard cutter Sedge plans to shoot holes in the barge to sink it today, letting turbulent seas disperse the fuel.
