Police in Ireland reported uncovering a cache of arms and ammunition believed to belong to Irish Republican Army guerrillas. The seizure, which included 12 Soviet-made Kalashnikov rifles, 47 magazines and more than 1,400 rounds of assorted ammunition, was packed into a plastic drum in undergrowth beside the River Nore near Kilkenny, 70 miles south of Dublin. Police officers said they believe that the cache was stored by the IRA for eventual transfer to Northern Ireland, where the guerrilla group is fighting against British rule. A man was detained for questioning under, police said.
