Advanced Marketing Services, a San Diego-based supplier of books and videocassettes to discount warehouse chains including Price Co., reported a 40% increase in net income and a 54% jump in revenue for the third quarter ended Dec. 31.

The company’s $3.3-million third-quarter profit on $75.2 million in sales is up from a $2.4-million profit on sales of $48.8 million over the same three months last year.

For the first nine months of the fiscal year, Advanced Marketing Service’s profit stood at $4.5 million on sales of $129.3 million, up from a year-to-date profit of $3 million on sales of $85.9 million for the same nine months last year.

Sales at customer locations open a year or longer increased 34% for the quarter and 27% for the nine months, the company said.

Third-quarter sales were increased by the videocassette “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,” president Charles C. Tillinghast said in a statement.
