Los Angeles City Councilman Ernani Bernardi returned to work Tuesday for the first time since being hospitalized for a cut to his head from a fall Jan. 4 at his Van Nuys home.

“I feel fine,” Bernardi, 77, said at his first council meeting since the Christmas recess.

The northeast San Fernando Valley councilman had been suffering from a flu-like virus when he fell and struck his head on a kitchen cabinet, causing a cut that required five stitches to close.

Bernardi, the council dean with 28 years of service, faces 12 challengers in the April 11 election in the 7th District, which includes Sylmar, Pacoima, Arleta and sections of Lake View Terrace, Mission Hills, North Hollywood, Panorama City, Sepulveda, Sun Valley and Van Nuys.
