A pilot after-school recreation program for children at four elementary schools was approved Tuesday by the Board of Governors of the Glendale Unified School District.

The program will be conducted during from Feb. 6 through June 23 at Balboa, Cerritos, Jefferson and Marshall schools. Parents will be charged $15 per week per child, which is expected to cover the cost of the program, to be offered weekdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

While a variety of state-subsidized child-care programs are available at a number of schools, the recreation program is the first to be sponsored solely by the district.

If the program is successful, it could be expanded to other schools in the fall, said Vic Pallos, district director of public information.
