Dan Quayle was sworn in as vice president of the United States today, but failed to take the entire oath of office.

Quayle placed his left hand on the family Bible held by his wife, Marilyn, and solemnly recited the vice president’s oath of office, administered at his special request by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

Repeating after O’Connor, Quayle said: “I, J. Danforth Quayle, swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

But O’Connor failed to read out the following phrase, “against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
