WCAC Roundup : St. Mary’s (16-1) Trounces Shorthanded USF, 71-53

Robert Haugen scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half Saturday night, and St. Mary’s overpowered the University of San Francisco, 71-53, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at USF.

The Dons (9-8 overall, 1-3 in the WCAC), were playing a second night without star center Mark McCathrion, whose father died last week.

USF was no match inside for St. Mary’s (16-1, 4-0); the Gaels took just 7 of their 26 first-half field goal attempts from outside 10 feet in building a 37-22 lead.

Haugen scored 8 points as St. Mary’s opened the second half with a 9-4 surge to build a 46-26 lead.

Kevin Mouton scored 25 points for USF, while Erick Newman added 13 for St. Mary’s.

Santa Clara 64, San Diego 58--Jeffty Connelly scored 19 points, and Mitch Burley added 14 as the Broncos won at Santa Clara.

The Toreros led by 8 points in the first half, but Santa Clara (12-5, 1-3) took the lead for good with 5:01 left in the half on a basket by Nils Becker and had a 27-24 halftime lead.

The Broncos led by 13 points with 6:18 left, but San Diego (5-11, 0-4) scored the next 8 points and closed within 53-48 with 1:54 left.

Danny Means, who scored 13 points, hit a 3-pointer to to make it 60-58 with 10 seconds left, but Burley and Melvin Chinn each made 2 free throws for Santa Clara.
