In Brief : Super Bowl Posts Viewer Increase

There was a viewer increase for San Francisco’s Super Bowl victory over Cincinnati from the previous year according to overnight ratings, an NBC-TV spokesman said today.

The rating for the game was 42.7 compared to 41.6, an increase of 3% over the rating for Washington’s trouncing of Denver, which was televised by ABC, said Kevin Monaghan, director, sports information. The 1988 game was the lowest-rated Super Bowl since 1974.

The share Sunday was 65%, compared to 60% a year ago, Monaghan said.

The rating is the percentage of television sets in the market. The share is the percentage of sets on at the time.

Overnight ratings are based on 17 of the top markets. Monaghan said the national ratings will be available Tuesday.

Other overnight ratings were 14.4 against a 14.5 last year for the pregame show and a 33.4 contrasted with a 25.0 for the postgame show.
