Digital Equipment Corp. announced new mid-size computers, and President Kenneth Olsen admitted that the company had miscalculated how popular the middle of its Vax line would be compared to its own top-of-the-line models. Olsen said its mid-size Vax 6200 computers had “cannibalized” sales of its 8800 models, which have more powerful processors but cost more. “It hurt our pride in planning--embarrassed us,” Olsen said of the unexpectedly slow sales of its 8800 models. The firm’s new machine is a 6300 series, which Digital said offers up to 35% better performance than the 6200 computers at only 5% higher price.
