U.S. rancher John Hull, detained in Costa Rica two weeks ago on charges of spying for the CIA and of links with arms and drugs traffickers, has been taken to a hospital with apparent heart problems, his doctor said Tuesday.

Max Pacheco said that Hull has been in poor health for several months, suffering from diabetes and cardiovascular problems, and was rushed to the hospital Monday.

Dr. Alexander Parajales of the San Juan de Dios Hospital said Hull was in stable condition but under constant observation after he suffering chest pains and lost consciousness at the prison where he was being held.

Hull allegedly helped funnel arms to U.S.-backed Contras through his large ranch close to the Nicaraguan border.

Officials say he could be tried for hostile acts against Costa Rica, an offense that carries a one- to six-year prison term.
