Our Failure to Value Education

Share

As an English teacher of 10th and 11th grade students, I am more moved and exhilarated by Thompson’s article on the worth of intellectual pursuits than I have been by articles of noted educators and experts during the past 15 years.

When the love of learning is not present, tears and cartwheels fail to stir the sleeping souls. When the support of intellectual yearnings is vacant, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens fail to titillate the barren spirits.

I am determined “to keep the darkness from engulfing us. . . .” And Stanley Thompson Jr., you are my beacon.
