NASA workers paused Friday to remember the seven crew members killed in the Challenger explosion three years ago.

“We won’t forget the sacrifice made by these seven fallen heroes,” Forrest S. McCartney, director of the Kennedy Space Center, told 17,000 workers in a brief televised message, delivered a day before the anniversary because most workers are off today.

Today, flags will be lowered to half-staff at 11:38 a.m., the moment Challenger roared off the launching pad on Jan. 28, 1986. For 73 seconds, the duration of the fatal flight, all activity will stop.
