Women’s Basketball Roundup : UCLA Uses 10-0 Run to Beat Washington St., 82-69

UCLA broke open a close game by going on a 10-0 run to take a 53-43 lead with 9 minutes left and went on to defeat Washington State, 82-69, Friday night in a Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball game at Pullman, Wash.

Junior forward Sandra VanEmbricqs scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as the Bruins (9-7 overall, 5-1 in the Pac-10) extended their winning streak to 5 games. UCLA trailed, 35-31, at halftime.

UCLA outrebounded Washington State, 40-32.

Forward Kristal Stahl led the Cougars (9-8, 2-5) with 22 points.

Washington 104, USC 73--The Trojans, with no starter scoring more than 5 points, could get no closer than 12 points in the second half and were routed in the Pac-10 game at Seattle.

Cherie Nelson and Teresa Strickland came off the bench to score 28 and 17 points, respectively, for USC (6-10, 2-5). Nelson made only 10 of 28 shots, but she had a game-high 13 rebounds.

For USC, starting center Rosalind Hodge and starting guard Tammy Story both scored 5 points. The starting 5 shot a combined 7 for 25.

Center Amy Mickelson scored 22 points and Yvette Cole had 20 for the Huskies (13-6, 6-1), who moved into second place in the Pac-10 behind Stanford.
