Island Remembrances

As yet another Englishman resident on your shores, imagine my anticipation on seeing the lead story on Jersey in the Travel Section. I actually come from Jersey and the sight of Royal Square in St. Helier and Gorey Harbor on the front page was enough to make me bypass the crossword puzzle and the Sports Section and go straight to what I expected to be the real thing.
In any case, Payne’s story is mildly pleasurable, but only if the reader has prior knowledge of the island. Jersey is in the English Channel and about 100 miles from England and 12 miles from the French coast. Topographically it is 12 miles by 7 miles and consists mostly of a series of bays extending around it. Each is breathtaking. There is much more, but not enough space to go into.
