A memorial service was held Tuesday for Donald M. Anderson, retired chief executive officer of Sunkist Growers Inc., the giant citrus marketing cooperative. Anderson was 81 when he died Jan. 20 in a Newport Beach hospital of the complications of Parkinson’s disease.

From 1965 to 1972 he was head of the world’s largest grower-owned citrus sales organization. During that tenure he was credited with opening the Japanese market to California-Arizona lemons and grapefruit.

Anderson joined Sunkist out of Oregon State College in 1931 and worked in the merchandising, advertising and information departments before advancing to the corporate level.
