Ladd Herzeg, general manager of the Houston Oilers, resigned Wednesday from the post he has held since 1981, saying he is ready to try something new.

“I feel I’ve accomplished my goals in Houston, and at this point in my life, I’m ready for a new challenge,” he said in a statement. “I know there is another mountain out there that needs to be conquered.”

Herzeg, who was not available for comment, did not say what he planned to do.

The Oilers scheduled a news conference for this morning, saying it was related to Herzeg. They would not confirm Herzeg’s resignation or specify the reason for the conference.

Herzeg has had a stormy career as Oiler general manager.

In 1987, he was involved in an altercation in Buffalo when he allegedly disrupted a wedding reception that was being held at the same hotel where the Oilers were staying.

This past season, he was the subject of a paternity suit and was recently involved in a slapping incident involving a Houston Chronicle reporter.

After the paternity suit incident, Herzeg resigned but his resignation was rejected by Oiler owner Bud Adams.
