A building under construction in Tijuana’s popular River Zone shopping area collapsed Friday, leaving at least one worker dead and three others injured, Fire Department authorities said.

Emergency crews were still combing the rubble Friday night, seeking other possible victims, said Capt. Jose Luis Sanchez Pacheco of the Tijuana Fire Department.

Details on the incident, which occurred at 4 p.m. Friday, were still sketchy Friday night.

All of those injured were thought to be Mexican construction workers working on the building, Sanchez said.

A 4-ton piece of concrete apparently broke loose from the new building’s fifth floor, undermining the structure below, Sanchez said.

Tijuana’s River Zone is a well-traveled destination for both Mexican and U. S. shoppers. The building that collapsed was near Dorian’s department store, a favorite destination.

One injured man was identified as Uvaldo Hernandez, 25, of Tijuana. The identities of the other victims were unavailable. Sanchez could not say how seriously injured the three survivors were.
