Former Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty, who was defeated by Tom Bradley in 1973, announced Friday that he will endorse Councilman Nate Holden in this year’s mayor’s race.

Yorty, 79, who was mayor for 12 years, said he chose to back Holden because he believes Bradley has neglected the Police Department. “The Police Department has been so handicapped by Bradley that the gangs have taken over,” he said.

Yorty said Holden would “provide better leadership” and “at least he’d pay attention to the city’s problems and not just run around the world grandstanding.”

“It’s irrelevant what Sam Yorty says,” said Dee Dee Myers, spokeswoman for the Bradley campaign. “I think it’s clearly a case of sour grapes.

“Sam Yorty was tossed out by the voters of Los Angeles for a good reason, and Tom Bradley remains the most popular mayor in the city’s history,” she said.
