Stick With Nature

We enjoy strolling through Presidio Park, relaxing under the blue sky, feeling the warmth of the sun and the gentle breezes, and especially viewing the beautiful greenery located high on the hill. And then a religious symbol, a rock and mortar cross promoting one particular religion, appears there.

We recently noticed that the once-tall standing shrubbery on the northwest side of that cross had been pruned down close to the ground. We suspect that the cutting of the greenery was done to improve the view of the cross for those traveling on Interstates 8 and 5. Yet why should someone who is not of the same religion be slapped in the face with it every time they drive by?

That cross of rock and mortar is certainly no piece of artistic beauty. City park officials decided that the cross had greater value than good old mother nature. Yet that cross has no order in the observation of nature and nature’s laws. It is out of place in Presidio Park. Park officials would have done well to leave nature alone.

Our San Diego city policy-makers and public administrators are hard-pressed to explain their endorsement of one religious faith over all others. The permanent placement of a particular religious symbol in a public park by one religion breaches the equal treatment for all others.
