Local News in Brief : Bill Introduced to Pay for Commuter Train

Share

The proposed Los Angeles-Oxnard commuter train service, which would pick up and discharge passengers at several San Fernando Valley stations, is among several dozen projects that would be financed under a $1.5-billion bond measure introduced in the state Legislature Tuesday.

The measure, which must be approved by the Legislature before it is submitted to voters in June, 1990, is one of several statewide transportation spending packages expected to be unveiled in Sacramento this month.

The principal author of the bill introduced Tuesday is Assemblyman Jim Costa (D-Fresno). Co-authors include state Sen. Alan Robbins (D-Van Nuys) and Assemblyman Tom Bane (D-Tarzana).

Robbins has been the leading sponsor of the Oxnard commuter service, which would operate on existing Southern Pacific tracks using rented rail passenger cars and diesel engines. He has proposed at least two round trips daily, with the 750-passenger trains traveling during rush hours.

Proposed stations would be at Glendale, Burbank, Panorama City, Northridge, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, Moorpark and Camarillo.
