An abandoned newborn baby was left on the front seat of a car in Covina early Tuesday and was found by the car’s owner as she prepared to leave for work.

The infant boy was “wrapped in a beach towel, with a red shoestring tying off the umbilical cord,” Dennis Richards, spokesman for Intercommunity Hospital of Covina, said after the baby was rushed there for medical attention.

The woman, who was not identified, discovered him in her unlocked car about 8:20 a.m., Covina Police Lt. Ron McKee said, and told officers: “He was shivering and shaking badly from the cold.”

Doctors estimated that the baby had been in the car an hour, Richards said, adding that the 7 1/2-pound infant is in good condition.

In an effort to find the parents or witnesses, officers are canvassing the Covina neighborhood, made up of apartment complexes, where the baby was found, McKee said.
