The State Lands Commission has issued a permit to allow Seagamb Inc. to make a dive off the Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to identify the location of a steamer that sank in 1901 with millions of dollars in gold ingots, opium, silk, jade and jewels on board. About $20 million in silver was also rumored to have been aboard the City of Rio de Janeiro when it sank with a loss of 121 lives. Seagamb will be allowed to make one dive in an attempt to retrieve an identifying artifact. “We are keenly disappointed that the State Lands Commission has issued a partial permit after having been told we could be given a full-use permit during the four-year application process,” said Melanie Morgan, a Seagamb spokeswoman.
