San Diego Opera will present an additional performance of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” April 26, following the four previously scheduled Civic Theatre performances April 15-23. The fifth performance will present the same cast, featuring tenor Jonathan Welch as Pinkerton and soprano Hiroko Nishida in the title role. According to opera general director Ian Campbell, heavy ticket sales for the popular opera prompted the addition, the first time the company has taken such action since Luciano Pavarotti appeared in a San Diego Opera “La Boheme” production in 1980.
