Ruthann Lehrer, 50, the first executive director of the Los Angeles Conservancy, has been named as the first neighborhood and historic preservation officer in Long Beach.

Lehrer gained a reputation as a crusading preservationist during her six years with the conservancy, a private nonprofit agency devoted to saving significant buildings.

She left the conservancy in 1987 to become administrative officer of the Center for Law in the Public Interest. She will assume the new $46,000-a-year job in Long Beach on Feb. 21.
