President Bush has decided to keep giving military aid to the Afghan rebels as long as the Soviets continue to support the Kabul government of President Najibullah, an Administration official said Friday.

Bush considered the issue at a National Security Council meeting early Friday before he left for Ottawa to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

“Our policy in Afghanistan remains one of positive symmetry,” the official said.

The United States said last spring when the Soviet troop withdrawal accord was signed in Geneva that Washington would continue to supply the rebels as long as the Soviets supply the Kabul government.
