Police said Friday they were investigating a report that someone had found the body of a boy allegedly abducted by youths who have acted as bodyguards for Winnie Mandela.

The fate 14-year-old Stompie Mokhetsi, missing since late December, has been at the center of a controversy surrounding the wife of jailed African National Congress leader Nelson R. Mandela.

The Weekly Mail, a prominent anti-apartheid newspaper, quoted an unidentified Soweto activist as saying the boy’s body was dug up Thursday in the black township outside Johannesburg. No other details were given. Police said they had not confirmed the report.
