NHL Roundup : Canucks Edge Sabres, End Four-Game Losing Streak

Tony Tanti had a goal and two assists as the Vancouver Canucks ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Friday at Buffalo, N.Y.

The win moved the fourth-place Canucks four points ahead of the last-place Winnipeg Jets in the Smythe Division.

Paul Reinhart, Jim Benning, Trevor Linden and David Bruce also scored for Vancouver.

For the Sabres, who have lost four in a row, Rick Vaive had a goal and two assists. Pierre Turgeon, Phil Housley and Jeff Parker added the other Buffalo goals.

Trailing 1-0 in the first period, Vancouver scored a pair of power-play goals. Reinhart tipped in Petri Skriko’s shot at 5:45, then had his shot tipped in by Tanti at 7:27.

After Turgeon scored his 24th goal of the season on a power play at 15:49, Vancouver regained the lead when Benning scored on a 50-foot floater that eluded goaltender Darcy Wakaluk at 17:25.

In the second period, Vaive tied the game again when he beat Steve Weeks from the top of the right circle at 1:09.

But Linden scored his 25th goal of the season on a rebound at 5:58, putting Vancouver ahead to stay.

Chicago 3, New York Islanders 1--Goaltender Alain Chevrier stopped 27 shots as the Blackhawks defeated the Islanders at Chicago.

Chevrier, who was traded to Chicago from Winnipeg on Jan. 19, has started all 10 games since his arrival. The Blackhawks are 7-3 in those games.

The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead on Steve Larmer’s 32nd goal of the season in the first period, and Everett Sanipass made it 2-0 at 7:32 of the second period.

The Islanders scored their only goal on Tomas Jonsson’s 25-foot slap shot at 12:27 of the third period. They pulled Kelly Hrudey in the final minute, but Troy Murray scored into an empty net with 29 seconds left.
