International Rectifier Corp. reported a net loss of $6.5 million for the second quarter, the same as it reported a year ago. Sales rose to $45 million, up 20%. The El Segundo supplier of power semiconductors blamed erratic demand, reduced gross margins reflecting lower production levels and a shortfall in shippable orders. Although up from the year-ago period, sales dropped below the level of the intervening quarters, so the company curtailed production to avoid building inventories. To a lesser extent, results were also affected by assembly production problems, which were corrected by the end of the quarter.
