Saddleback College is planning an honors program in the fall to challenge gifted students who plan to continue their educations at 4-year colleges.

The program will be open to entering freshmen with overall high school grade-point averages of 3.25 or better or continuing students with comparable grade records, according to instructor Curt McLendon, chairman of the Honors Board. Participation in honors courses is one criterion that the University of California uses for transfer admission.

Saddleback’s program will require completion of 15 units of honors courses with a minimum GPA of 3.25 and an overall college GPA of 3.25. Honors classes will include English composition, literature and a team-taught humanities course that will have a regularly changing theme.
