Pyramid Lake Reopens With Improved Bass Bite

Pyramid Lake, closed for nearly a week because of snow and ice, reopened Sunday with a vastly improved striped bass bite.

Simi Valley resident Paul Selkirk caught six stripers totaling 49 pounds. Meanwhile, Westchester’s Bob Hanley, who caught two stripers weighing 18 pounds Sunday, caught two more on Tuesday.

LAKE MEAD--Striped and largemouth bass biting mostly in Vegas and Government wash areas. Live shad and frozen anchovies working best for stripers; plastic worms best bet for largemouth.

BULLHEAD CITY--Trout to 2 pounds biting in river, with most baits working. Lake fishermen catching fewer fish, but some to 4 pounds. Catfish biting best in Topock Marsh.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina bite fair at Red Hill and Mulet Island. Artificial lures working best. Croaker picking up, biting best at Bombay Beach.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout biting near dam and island. Largemouth bass slow, biting spotty, biting best in main channel off rocky shoreline. Smallmouth bass taking small crawfish off rocky shorelines.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass picking up, biting primarily on plastic worms and crawfish at 20-25 feet. Mark Simpson, Oxnard, 11-pound bass. Trollers using lead-core line at 20 feet catching most trout.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass picking up, biting best in marina.

LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing fair, biting best near marina. Cheese-based baits working best. Largemouth bass picking up, biting throughout lake. Plastic worms best bet. Catfish slow.

LAKE CASTAIC--Largemouth bass biting best in upper lake. Ed Lishok, Norwalk, three bass totaling 22 pounds. Trout biting in both lakes on most baits.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout bite best at Trout Island, Sierra Cove and Red Cliffs. Tim Cerny, Anaheim, 10-6 trout, caught on nightcrawler.

LAKE SKINNER--Several limits of trout, most between 1-2 pounds. Marina and bays across from marina best areas. Largemouth bass slow, with fish averaging 2 1/2 pounds.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass picking up, biting best near dam. Richard Gerhard, San Bernardino, 18-pound striper, caught near dam. Crappie and largemouth bass biting under docks.

LAKE HENSHAW--Crappie bite good under docks.
