Scott LeTellier, a Newport Beach lawyer, will be named president of the organizing committee for soccer’s 1994 World Cup, the first one ever awarded to the United States, a source said Tuesday.

A formal announcement will be made Monday in a U.S. Soccer Federation meeting at Seattle.

LeTellier, 38, served as outside legal counsel for the bid committee, which was selected to stage the 1994 World Cup last July 4 by the international soccer federation. The United States won the bid over Brazil and Morocco.

In his role with the committee, LeTellier was involved with negotiations for the 18 stadiums under consideration as World Cup sites, securing cooperation from various governmental agencies, drafting the bid document and the formal presentation before the federation.

LeTellier also drafted the organizing committee’s business plan for 1989, which will be presented Monday.

As an assistant vice president for sports of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee (LAOOC), LeTellier was primarily involved with soccer, equestrian and baseball. At the time of the Games in 1984, he was the LAOOC’s legal counsel.

His position with the World Cup organizing committee is similar to the one Peter Ueberroth held with the LAOOC.
