New U.S. and European Community negotiators will tackle a rash of trade grievances later this week amid signs that a compromise in their vexing beef hormones row is taking shape. The inheritors of a string of nettlesome disputes, EC Commissioner for External Relations Frans Andriessen and U.S. Trade Representative Carla A. Hills--both new to the job--meet for the first time Friday evening and again Saturday. EC Farm Minister Ray MacSharry and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Clayton K. Yeutter will meet separately Friday and participate in the Saturday session. U.S. officials, diplomats and lobbyists agree that the stage is set for a narrowing of differences on at least two of the most troublesome issues, beef trade and farm subsidies.
